Classification and Material Types of Crane Wheels

The crane wheel is a device used to support the crane and the load, and use the crane to run back and forth on the track. The track bears the wheel pressure of the crane wheels and guides the movement of the crane wheels. There are four types of rails commonly used for cranes, that is, crane exclusively use steel rails, railway rails, square steel rails and T-shaped steel rails. So what are the classifications of crane wheels?

Crane wheel classification

1. According to the rim form, crane wheels ca be divided into three types: double rim wheels, single rim wheels and no rim wheels. The function of the rim is to guide and prevent the derailment of the car body.

Usually, the wheels of large carts use double rim wheels with a height of 25-30mm; the wheels of trolleys use single rim wheels with a height of 20-25mm; wheels without rims can only be used in decorations with horizontal guide wheels on both sides of the wheels. The use of rimless wheels must be equipped with level wheels to prevent rails. The wheels guide is replaced by the horizontal wheel guide, and the sliding of the wheel flange and the front of the track is changed to the rolling of the horizontal wheel and the front of the track, which reduces the running resistance and increases the service life of the wheel.

2. Crane wheels can be divided into three types according to the tread content: cylindrical, conical and conical drum.

Cylindrical wheels are mostly used for driven wheels and can also be used for driving wheels. Conical wheels are used as drive wheels for crane carts.

The tread of the original conical drum-shaped wheels usually has a taper of 1:10. When installing, install the end with the large diameter of the wheel on the inner side of the span, so that the operation is stable and the driving wheel is straight.

3. Crane wheels are divided into forged wheels and cast wheels according to the production process.

Forged wheels are produced by forging the blank after heat treatment, then cutting and subsequent heat treatment. The process is more complicated, but it also has better performance. Good heat dissipation, high strength, not easy to break after impact, strong plasticity, can be customized at will. The price is slightly higher. It is mostly suitable for places with high work intensity and complex working environment.

The casting wheel is to heat and melt the raw materials, pour them into the prepared mold, and then perform simple processing after cooling to complete the production. The advantage is that the design flexibility is high, the shape and size can be controlled at will according to the mold, the application range is wider, the production cycle is short, and the price and economy also have advantages. But the strength is slightly lower, and the overall performance is not as good as forged wheels.

The types of crane wheel materials

The types of crane wheel materials are mainly 65#, 65Mn, 42CrMo and so on.

65# steel, medium and high carbon spring steel. The steel has high strength, hardness and elasticity after heat treatment or cold treatment hardening, low cold deformation plasticity, poor weldability, oil quenching is generally used, and large cross-section parts are hardened by water quenching, oil cooling or normalizing treatment.

65Mn spring steel, management improves hardenability, Φ12mm steel can be hardened in oil, the surface decarburization tendency is smaller than silicon steel, the comprehensive mechanical properties after heat treatment are better than carbon steel, but it has overheating sensitivity and temper brittleness.

42CrMo steel belongs to ultra-high-strength steel, with high strength and toughness, hardenability, hardenability is also good, no obvious tempering brittleness, high fatigue limit and resistance to multiple shocks after tempering treatment, low temperature impact toughness is good.
