Reasons for Crane Drum Rust And Rust Prevention Measures
Crane drum as a result of frequent use, coupled with the environment may be more humid, which will cause the phenomenon of rust, this situation not only affects its beauty, but also affects the use of performance. The following is to analyse the reasons for crane drum rust, and understand the rust prevention measures.
Reasons for crane drum rust
Commonly used crane drums generally have steel plate welding drums and casting drums, these drums are made of steel, iron alloy, etc., is very easy to rust, so it will be sprayed with paint.
The paint will form a very thin, strong, dense and stable chromium-rich oxide film (protective film) on the surface of the crane drum to prevent the continuous penetration of oxygen atoms, continue to oxidise and gain corrosion resistance. But if a certain situation occurs, the film will continue to be destroyed, the oxygen atoms in the air or liquid will continue to penetrate, or the iron atoms in the metal will continue to separate out, forming loose iron oxide, the metal surface will continue to be corroded, resulting in crane drum rust. Common causes are:
1. Deposits of dust containing other metal elements or adhesives of different metal particles on the surface of the crane drum. In humid air, condensation between the adhesive and the adhesive and stainless steel connects the two into a miniature battery, leading to an electrochemical reaction and the destruction of the protective film. This is called galvanic corrosion.
2. Adherents on the surface of the crane drum contain acids, alkalis and salts (e.g. lye and lime water splashed on decorative walls), causing localised corrosion.
3. Working in polluted air (e.g. atmosphere containing large amount of sulphide, carbon dioxide and nitric oxide), sulphuric acid, nitric acid and acetic acid will be formed in the presence of condensate, thus causing chemical corrosion.
4. Crane drums in seaside areas, due to long-term in the humid air, and the air will contain traces of salt, will quickly make the steel oxidation reaction and rust.
Crane drum rust prevention measures
Because of the working characteristics of the crane drum, can not avoid corrosion damage caused by the environment, so can only take measures to strengthen the crane drum’s own rust resistance, that is, paint work.
1. Paint and paint methods used for crane drums should be applied to the climatic and environmental conditions of the region where they are used, and the paint and coating process should be in accordance with the recognised standards and specifications. Crane drum should be cleaned and descaled on the surface of the part to be painted before painting. Paint application should be carried out in the range of air temperature 10-32 ℃, but also consider the paint manufacturer’s specifications for the use of paint, the painting site should be well ventilated, and measures should be taken when encountering damp, dusty or scorching sunshine, otherwise the painting work should be stopped.
2. Crane drums are painted with airless pressure spraying equipment, and the film thickness is measured by a metric dry film thickness gauge. Stir the paint before use until all the components of the paint are completely mixed. If the paint components have a tendency to settle quickly, stir frequently. When the same colour is applied in successive coats, it is applied in layers, with each layer having sufficient contrast to allow identification of full coverage.
The crane drum is one of the key components of the crane’s function, and its design and performance directly affect the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the crane.
