Why Do Hot Rolled Pulleys Need to Be Quenched?

Hot rolled pulleys are made of high-strength steel plates as raw materials through hot rolling process. The hot rolling process is to roll the steel plates into a certain shape and size at high temperature. This process can improve the strength and hardness of the pulley while reducing the consumption of raw materials.

The production process of hot-rolled pulleys is quite special. The main step is rolling by a rolling mill, and the subsequent process often requires quenching. So, why do hot-rolled pulleys need to be quenched?

What is quenching?

Quenching is a heat treatment process that heats steel to above the critical temperature, keeps it warm for a certain period of time, and then cools it at a rate greater than the critical cooling rate to obtain an unbalanced structure dominated by martensite (or bainite or single-phase austenite can be obtained as needed). Quenching is the most widely used process in steel heat treatment. After the workpiece is heated to austenite, it is cooled in an appropriate manner to obtain a heat treatment process of martensite or bainite structure. Common ones include water-cooled quenching, oil-cooled quenching, air-cooled quenching, etc.

Purpose of quenching hot-rolled pulleys

The purpose of quenching is to transform the supercooled austenite into martensite or bainite to obtain martensite or bainite structure, and then temper it at different temperatures to greatly improve the rigidity, hardness, wear resistance, fatigue strength and toughness of the pulley blank, so as to meet the different use requirements of hot-rolled pulleys in various environments. Quenching can also be used to meet the special physical and chemical properties of certain special steels such as ferromagnetism and corrosion resistance.

A metal heat treatment process in which a metal workpiece is heated to a certain appropriate temperature and maintained for a period of time, and then immersed in a quenching medium for rapid cooling. Commonly used quenching media include salt water, water, mineral oil, air, etc. Quenching can improve the hardness and wear resistance of metal workpieces.

By combining quenching with tempering at different temperatures, the strength, toughness and fatigue strength of the metal can be greatly improved, and the coordination between these properties (comprehensive mechanical properties) can be obtained to meet different usage requirements. In addition, quenching can also make some steels with special properties obtain certain physical and chemical properties, such as quenching to enhance the ferromagnetism of permanent magnet steel and improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Therefore, quenching treatment of hot rolled pulley is a very important process, which can greatly improve the performance of hot rolled pulley.

Advantages of hot-rolled pulleys

1. Strength advantages of hot-rolled pulleys

Hot-rolled pulleys are made by hot-rolling process, which makes them have higher strength. After the wheel body is hot-rolled, its internal grain structure is optimized, thereby improving the bending and torsion resistance of the pulley. This makes the hot-rolled pulley have better stability and reliability when bearing heavy loads and running at high speeds.

2. Weight advantage of hot-rolled pulleys

Hot-rolled pulleys are made of high-strength steel plates, which ensures their strength while being light in weight. This helps to reduce the overall weight of mechanical equipment, reduce energy consumption, and improve operating efficiency.

3. Wear resistance of hot-rolled pulleys

The wheel body of the hot-rolled pulley has been hot-rolled, with high surface hardness and excellent wear resistance. This enables the hot-rolled pulley to maintain good performance during long-term use and reduce maintenance and replacement costs.

Hot rolled pulleys are widely used in port machinery, lifting equipment, mining machinery, construction machinery and other fields. They can work in various harsh environments, withstand heavy loads and high-speed operation, and provide stable power transmission for mechanical equipment.

With the continuous improvement of industrial manufacturing level, the demand for hot-rolled pulleys is also increasing year by year. In the future, hot-rolled pulleys will continue to optimize the manufacturing process, improve performance, reduce costs, and provide better products and services for all walks of life.
